Population Trend

Population Trend

For rural communities to remain viable, they need to maintain a critical number of residents of a range of demographics. There is variability in population dynamics across the Wheatbelt region however, rural depopulation, particularly the loss of young people, is common in Wheatbelt communities.

How can we monitor progress?

At Wheatbelt NRM Inc. we have searched for data that can help us monitor the population dynamics and opportunities for people of the region. At a regional and sub-regional level we can report on the number of people living in close proximity to major centres and the direction of population change (growth or decline). We can also follow the changing size of farms, changing age-structure, high school enrolment numbers, and employment rates as indicators of opportunities for young people.
